A quiet town Kluang locates in the center of Johor, at south
Malaysia does not having theme park or museum as the tourist attractions. Yet, it is a hidden place of lovely people with their local foodies! In Malay called Daerah Kluang, a place I grown up and where I belong
to. Different races and lingual have created a colorful community.
Let me bring you to our local specialties and recommendations!
Do you love foods, there are right places for you to go for. You can enjoy Malay, Chinese to Indian
multicultural delicacies.
(1) Kluang Railway Coffee gives you energy for the long day. Breakfast can
be so simple with a cup of black coffee, kaya butter toast and half-boiled
eggs. Besides that, there also offers Malay Lontong, Mee
Siam, Nasi Lemak, Rendang and so on.
(2) Ru Yi (如意) Restorant also one of my favorite kopitiam. It serves
smooth kopi and teh tarik (coffee and tea). There are varieties of food stalls
for value pieces of Yong Tou Fu noodles, (vegetarian) Hakka
Kiam Teh, roasted chichen and sprouts bean chicken rice, mi hun kueh, and
sandwiches....
(3) Quan Ji (群记)Bak KutTeh, Jin Fu (金福)Bak Kut Teh serve strong taste of tea
pot cooked with pork, organs, lettuces, mushroom and you tiao.
(non-halal) Personal preference, I like soup base Bak kut teh but there is also
dry pot. It is served right with yam rice.
(4) Tangkak Beef (东甲牛肉面) is famous of its beef's stomach noodles. People are willing
to Q here in the afternoon. The beef bone soup is very juicy, soft beef slices
and no odor from the beef.
(5) If you like Curry Noodles, try Botak Curry Noodles or Ming
Xiang (铭香)Curry Noodles. Have bloody cockles with thick creamy curry.
(6) Huang Di Mian (皇帝面) at Taman Sri
Itan for its handmade chewy wantan noodles, and even the green
crunchy chilies attracted me.
(7) Gui Ji (贵记)Fish Ball Noodles at
Taman Muhibah offers the jumping fish balls. A family business sells handmade Xi Dao fish balls and sour hot red chilies.
(8) Aluminum Foil Asam Fish (铝纸鱼) at
Taman Haji Manan. It famous for its asam fish and valuable price, you may add
on fried eggs, fried vegetables and other Zhu
Chars. Here, we enjoyed our dinner very much.
(9) Long Xiang (龙香) Chicken Rice at Taman Itan offers smooth white chicken skin and
its fragrant chicken rice, tastes it with the garlic and chili sauces.
(10) The Star at 10 & 12 Jalan Sultanah, Kampung Masjid Lama serves restaurant style's dishes, just nice for family's celebration. Chef recommendation for their Peking Roasted Duck! Yum yum..
(10) How about Indian Roti, roti canai, roti prata, nun, tissues and sup
kambing. Kluang Little India at city central where you can look for most of the Indian food and find them at 24hours Indian Restorant. The strong spices of curry make
you feel even hungry!
(11) Look for kampong taste Malay food, here at most mamak stalls sell Nasi Lemak (simple combination of coconut rice with eggs, cucumber and sambal) and Teh Tarik are the typical breakfast and tea options!
Where to go for old days’ tea time?
(1) Coffee and buns or kuih-muih (Flourish
snacks). Tou Sha bun which has smooth, sweeten red bean filling. I like it so
much. Besides also have Nyonya kuih. And Peanut Tang Yuan (rice balls) at Jalan Yap Tau Sha.
(2) The sun is too hot. Twist your thirst with ABC Ice Kacang and Cendols.
At an old pasar Jia Mian (佳冕) sells this
mountain-liked ice with jelly, sagu, milk, colour dressing and ice cream topping!
Also, find out the motorbike stall just beside the main street, selling cheap
cendol fro RM1.50 each.
Don’t sweat you will not feel hungry! Move your butt, climb up Gunung Lambak, the landmark of Kluang
where you must visit. It is 510m from the sea level, hiking track is safe for
travelers. So get ready your snickers!!
If it is Friday, Saturday or Sunday, you can go to local pasar malam (night market). Maybe you
need a friend to show you the way, Taman Sri Kluang, Taman Jalan Sampaah and
Taman Muhibah have night markets on the respective day. It is special for you
to walk around with some snacks, rojak,
popiah, satay, carrot cakes and buy fresh vegetables and fishes.
When the sky falling dusk, drive to Zhi
Luan Ge (紫銮阁), a Chinese temple at Jalan Yap Tau Sha. The growing light will
amaze you. Last Mid-Autumn Fest, there was a big funfair here, it still
conserves part of the lighting decoration.
One day trip to Kluang is just enough to look around and satisfied your
craving. Before leaving, bring back Tiong Huat (东发饼家)Tau Sha Pia and Kluang Cap TV
Coffee for your relatives and friends.
